Summary/Abstract: This article sets out to examine what it is we know when we know how to translate, and whether this mastery consists of knowledge we can pass on our students. After discussing the relevant theories and concepts concerning the relationship between a practical ability and a reflexive activity which makes translating possible, the article questions both the possibility of teaching the art of translating and those attitudes regarding wariness towards this (im)possibility.
