Summary/Abstract: The aesthetics, ethics and practices of translation have long formed subjects of research and reflection of varying visibility depending on the translation school, era and ideology. This fact is still relevant nowadays, even if it is true that for some time a process of de-atomization can be noticed in the translation studies field. At the initiative of the ISTTRAROM-Translationes research group, the colloquium held on March 26th and 27th 2010, at the West University of Timisoara (Romania) proposed to consider this theme under multiple aspects and look at the progress and achievements in translation studies research. The objective was threefold: to draw up an assessment of the various theories which for a long time constituted the basis of translational (aesthetic and / or ethical) approaches, to examine many aspects related to the aesthetics of translation, to relaunch the debate on the fundamental rights and duties of both literary and specialized translator.

- Summary/Abstract:The translation of literary works may constitute the object of several, however convergent subjects: the poetics of translation, stylistics, literary semiotics, rhetoric, comparative literature, the aesthetics of translation, etc. Jean-René Ladmiral is in favour of the aesthetics of translation, because this is a more general category within which the other approaches may be integrated. The object of study of the aesthetics of translation will be the difference that might appear between literary genres rooted in different cultures, which may turn out to be a real challenge for s/he who translates literature. Thus, the aesthetics of translation tackles the long-standing problem of literalism. Last, in connection with the literary domain itself, the author sketches a general aesthetics of various means of translation.

- Summary/Abstract:The author's primary aim in this article is to evoke Jauss’ aesthetics of reception in order to (re)situate the translator in what she calls the aesthetics of translation reception adjusted by the translator. To this purpose, Georgiana Lungu-Badea tries to distinguish direct reception (of the receptor-translator and the source-reader) from “indirect” reception (of the target-reader). From the perspective of various dichotomies, three- and four-parts classifications, the author identifies four types of entropic agreements – determined, more or less, by linguistic hospitality or by the desire to translate. These agreements inevitably influence the aesthetics (of betrayal/fidelity) of the translated work. In order to illustrate the essential role played by the translator in the process of reception, the aesthetic differences are illustrated by mentioning a number of Romanian translations.

- Summary/Abstract:Translation criticism, the equivalent of literary criticism in the history and theory of translation, though convincingly put forward by Antoine Berman as a discipline in its own right, has not yet acquired a real existence in the practice of literary journals or magazines. Reflections on translation have offered some landmarks, illustrations, even directions, but they have never got very far. In exchange, we can find all around and along the borderland of this not yet fully-fledged discipline, a series of forms and practices of analysis and evaluation of the translated text as contrasted to the original and the other versions, like commentary or chronicle, which pave the way for its development. By means of exegeses or studies, which have originally been doctoral theses, translation criticism is thoroughly taken into account. In the present article, the author aims at analyzing several practices on the fringes of translation criticism in the Romanian (French-speaking) literary and academic world, in order to enlighten this important and (de)valorizing phenomenon for both translation and the translator.

- Summary/Abstract:Translation of a literary text implies the repetition of the creative act. Therefore, its result inevitably shows traces of the translator’s subjective approach in the new artistic project. The objective of this study is to present how the recurring choices made by the translator with regard to personal pronouns, inter- and intra-phrasal cohesion, as well as transfer of social and cultural elements, affect communication between the author of the original work and projected reader of the text. Final evaluation of the target text is based on criteria suggested by Antoine Berman that is poeticity and ethicity.

- Summary/Abstract:Starting from a corpus of successive translations of Moliere's and Caragiale's comedies, the aim of this article is to demonstrate that modern translations / adaptations disregard the canons of present day translatology, inclined towards more and more abstract theoretical approaches. Translation practice in the area of theatre goes beyond theory and contains - maybe better than other forms of literary translation - the new acquisitions of contemporary cultural reception. Willingly or not, today's spectator/consumer asks for the renewed adaptation of past authors. If the conservation of theatre in the new millennium is at stake, one should also understand the necessity of daringly reinventing the well-known world playwrights.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper expresses a point of view about the liaison (never dangerous!) between the history of translation and the axiological theory about the formation of aesthetic canons via translation. One of the activities carried out by the Coppet Group, whose spokesperson has been Mme de Staël, is translation, cultivated in order to demonstrate the need to conceive literature differently. In their effort to connect the literary and aesthetic movements of Western Europe (the budding Romanticism), the members of the Coppet Group back up their writings with translations.

The author considers Vulpescu’s translation to be a very successful one, owing to his own artistic skills and particular empathy with Brassens, as well as to his vast experience as a translator.

- Summary/Abstract:Today it would seem appropriate to talk about ethics in the plural, taking into account all the actors involved in the process – translator, publisher, author and audience. In the same spirit, the profession needs to be looked upon from the perspective of the market. This study proposes an outline of the Romanian ethics in translation giving two recent yet opposite examples: a philosophical text and a crime novel. In terms of method, the author focuses on translatology accompanied by sociological remarks on translation in order to depict the state of play between the various ethics involved, from the decision to publish a translation down to the sale figures.

- Summary/Abstract:The 20th century disrupted the translation’s paradigms and took great care in preserving the linguistic and cultural difference, moving the stress from language to text. Nowadays, the translation makes an effort to keep the presence of the original in the receptive language without trying to domesticate the foreign. This way it achieves the “Test of the Foreign” (Berman) thanks to the “linguistic hospitality” (Ricœur) offered to the Other from the “tribe” of those who are in the same language (Mallarmé).

- Summary/Abstract:Based on the dynamic nature of signification, the present paper analyzes “the play” of reformulations provided by translators. In particular, it focuses on the ways in which professional translators change the content of the source text in the translation process. Taking into account that source text production and target text production are not identical processes, special emphasis is placed on those reformulations which move away from the literality of the original text. In addition, the solutions offered by translators are looked at in terms of their pertinence. - Summary/Abstract:Starting with the second half of the 19th century, Romanian medical terminology has undergone a process of modernization under the influence of French. Romanian medical terms borrowed from French have undergone a process of adaptation to the rules of Romanian valid for all other neologisms. Moreover, certain simple or compound adjectives, such as macular, papilar, ultrasonografic, angiofluorografic, parapapilar, etc. can be used as adverbs without any formal modification. The aim of this study is to examine different possibilities of translating into French such adjectives used as adverbs as a result of inadequate derivation. The corpus of examples comprises texts belonging to the ophthalmology field.

- Summary/Abstract:Audio-visual translation is part of general translation which is, unfortunately, ignored in the teaching of translation and the translators' training. There are a lot of distinctions between the translation of a written text and that of audio-visual documents. These distinctions are the result of different semiotic codes involved in this type of translation. If the text translation accomplishes a transposition from a written text to another written text, in the case of the audio-visual translation, this happens from the oral to the written code, simultaneously containing verbal, auditory and visual information. This kind of translation requires special skills, such as literature translation, specialized text translation as well as technical skills.

- Summary/Abstract:This article concentrates on literary translation and intends to offer a brief outline of the strategies of cultural transport used in the translation of the hugolien novel Notre-Dame-de-Paris within the Romanian space. The methodology employed consists of comparing the source text with some Romanian versions, approaching the problems of translation raised by certain sequences (non-existent cultural entities in the Romanian culture, terms which relate to sociopolitical organization, the name of holidays, public services, proper nouns, verbal expressions). From the very first page of the novel, the Romanian translators are faced with several problems because of the cultural elements contained in the text. To draw a successful correspondence between sociocultural connotations, the Romanian translators have to possess language and linguistic skills and they must master the use of the right translation strategies.

- Summary/Abstract:This study reflects the author's concerns regarding translation techniques and strategies emerging from translation ethics which, according to Antoine Berman, consists of preserving the foreign character of the original text. This preoccupation materialized in a comparative study of the Lebanese writer of French expression Amin Maalouf’s novel "Le Périple de Baldassare" and its Romanian translation by Ileana Cantuniari. The theoretical references concerning translation as comprehension of identity, culture and thought will be applied in the analysis of the translation strategies and problems posed by the original text.
