Summary/Abstract: The translation of literary works may constitute the object of several, however convergent subjects: the poetics of translation, stylistics, literary semiotics, rhetoric, comparative literature, the aesthetics of translation, etc. Jean-René Ladmiral is in favour of the aesthetics of translation, because this is a more general category within which the other approaches may be integrated. The object of study of the aesthetics of translation will be the difference that might appear between literary genres rooted in different cultures, which may turn out to be a real challenge for s/he who translates literature. Thus, the aesthetics of translation tackles the long-standing problem of literalism. Last, in connection with the literary domain itself, the author sketches a general aesthetics of various means of translation.
