In Search of Lost Identities. On Images of Women Theatre A Artists in the 19th Century Croatian Culture

Summary/Abstract: Taking as a starting point the fact that women theatre artists are subjects which, by the assumptions and the effects of their profession, endanger the borders between the masculine public sphere, and the feminine domestic one, the paper examines ‘the defence rhetoric’ of the nineteenth-century Croatian culture confronted with their subversive potential. These texts, most of which were published in the Croatian nineteenth-century literary periodicals, reveal how ‘public women’s identities’, treated with contempt by patriarchal ideology, were disciplined by the roles of ‘Our daughters’ and ‘virtuous mothers and wives’, and transferred into the symbols of ideal national heroines.
