Summary/Abstract: Reticence, isolation and distrust are distinctive features of the rural societies, such, undisputedly, was the Serbian society from the 19th century. Because of the poor social relations, friendships and marital relationships were established mainly in the closed circle of already made contacts with the fellow villagers or people from the neighbouring villages. Marriages between new settlers and natives or between representatives of different ethnic groups were rare. A small number of female foreigners who married Serbians dared to move and live in Serbia. The foreigners were well accepted in the society only when they demonstrated eagerness to adapt themselves to the new society and its language, customs and traditions. However, the role of these female foreigners as mediators between the cultures was not understood and evaluated.
