Summary/Abstract: In the article, the author analyses the pursuits of activists in one of the counties of England, which are aimed at obtaining the status of a nation with its directly elected authorities. She sketches out the main lines of the debate regarding this issue which is in process in the United Kingdom. She also looks at the economic and political situation of Cornwall with a view to responding to the question as to what degree the pursuit of autonomy is justifi ed and whether the activists have any chance of success. In her opinion, both the county’s poor economic situation and the unsolved legal issues related to the existence of the Duchy of Cornwall render a rapid solution to the problem impossible. On the other hand, growing support for the idea of an autonomic Cornwall puts this issue on the unavoidable agenda for central government.
