Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the positions of directly elected mayors in self--government structures in Poland and England. Its purpose is to indicate the main premises for reforms introducing directly elected executive bodies in Polish and English self-governments. The article also shows the political background of the implemented reforms and assesses the most important changes that the new solutions related to the executive bodies have introduced into the functioning of local democracy. English solutions are presented against the background of solutions introduced in Poland.
