Keywords: verb; dish; name

Summary/Abstract: The article offers an analysis of verbs which come from the names of dishes, spices and herbs, e.g. pieprzyć, chrzanić, dosolić, kiełbasić, schlebiać, słodzić, cukrować, pierniczyć, spaprykować, podchmielić, odmiętować. The derivates are neither new nor unusual. Traces of their presence are quite visible in Old Polish. However, in comparison to modern usage, previous forms used to have different meanings and functioned in different contexts. Therefore the main purpose of the presentation is to trace back the process of their evolution. In the article, their forms have been divided into three semantic categories according to their roots. The first group consists of derivates referring to the hot and bitter herb called chmiel (hop). The second category is composed of nouns indicating sweet taste. The third one comprises verbs referring to various culinary delicacies, e.g. chleb, migdał (bread, almond). All the examples of their usage have been given in accordance with this classification.
