Summary/Abstract: The article covers the phenomenon of legal language contradiction as a fundamental characteristic of legal language at large and that of legal English in particular, arising from its particular role in society and specific functions surpassing those of other languages for specific purposes. While analyzing the contradictory character of legal language, the author pays special attention to linguistic, social and cultural sources of contradictions and classifies the identified contradictions accordingly. Characterizing the contradictions of legal language as a linguistic, social and cultural phenomenon, the author emphasizes the importance of studying legal language on the basis of comprehensive intersystem and comparative approaches at national and supranational levels.
