Summary/Abstract: Rabindranath Tagore who received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913 primarily for his Gitanjali (Song Offerings) was a versatile genius. Although Tagore was primarily a poet, and he said on one occasion that he entered into his real self when he wrote poetry, his genius touched every branch of literature – novel, drama, short story, critical essays, travelogues and autobiographical writings. The only literary form that he did not experiment with is the epic. But it would not be wrong to say that through his highly eventful career and inexhaustible creativity spanning eight decades, he virtually lived an epic though he did not write any.
