Summary/Abstract: Using the concept of ‘unconscious historicization’ developed by British anthropologist Ch. Stewart, the paper explores a particular way to account for the ‘hidden’ history of the Interwar period. We delineate carefully the cultural setting to which this conceptual tool is to be applied, namely, concern with remote history well attested in various Balkan societies, and the inscription of history into a national territory in the material form of ‘treasure’. Then we move to the prophetic activities of a renowned Bulgarian religious visionary woman to scrutinize the concern with national history in the messages she has received in her ‘dreams’. In the final section of the paper we deal with selected prophetic performances of two visionaries from the circle of the Good Samaritan Orthodox association, and show how they reflect both popular knowledge of the past and concern with the current events, as well as the expectations for the future.
