Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the Italian oratorio in Poland in the period of Stanisław August Poniatowski (1764–1795). In that time Italian dramatic genres were of a great importance in Polish cultural life as they were considered, together with the French dramaturgy, the main source of inspiration for many Polish poets and musicians of the second half of the XVIII century. Apart from Italian "opera seria", also Italian oratorio used to be frequently executed in Poland and the librettos were published not only in original version but also translated in Polish, some of them even more than once. The reasons for which the Polish versions of Italian librettos were prepared were various and the destination of the translation was crucial to the form of the text. The aim of the article is to verify if and how the transfer from Italian to Polish had an influence on the oratorio considered a musical-literary genre.
