Summary/Abstract: Risk occurring in medical business activities both in Poland and in Europe is now recognized as one of the greatest challenges facing healthcare systems in different countries. The main factors affecting the development of health protection sector (and therefore the possibilities of occuring different types of risks) are rising costs of health, competition, the growth of private health care institutions, the cost of new medical technologies and aging. Most decisions in medical companies are made under conditions of risk and uncertainty due to the changes that occur in the micro-and macro-environment of their functioning. The rationalization of management decisions should be based on the objective of identifying the types of risks, measuring a risk and deciding on the size of its acceptance and the use of instruments to limit this phenomenon. The paper presents a typology of risks and risk management methodology examples including the main activities and processes carried out in medical companies.
