Summary/Abstract: Through a critical analysis of the ..theory of rational action" as well as by drawing on the sociological conceptions of V. Pareto and P. Bour-dieu a broad interpretation of social rationality as practical wisdom is propounded. Social rationality is seen as rational behaviour directed and legitimatized through patterns of ..construeing" and ..interpreting" reality adopted in the course of both individual and collective development. It is from this perspective that ideoligies are grasped as manifestations of social rationality in terms of their fundamental functional implications. Mass con-sciouness reflexes and illusions - resulting from the prevailing patterns of interpretation and dealing with the social world - are seen as specific forms of social rationality, too. The above general theoretical conclusions are verified on the example ol practical rationality under social transition.
