Summary/Abstract: The article treats the question about the relationship between folklore and history. Special attention is given to the peculiar character of the idea of historical time in the various epochs. The author reveals the relations between the historical song and the historical legend in search of common features in the attitude towards the historical facts. She gives the general outlines of the basic themes, characters and ideas in the Bulgarian historical legends. An analysis is also made of the changes in the genre poetics and in the contents of ideas in them, which gradually occurred in the course of about a century (19th – 20th c.). The author pays attention as to how these legends exist among the people, as well as to the differences between a genuine folk lore text and the written revisions of the legends. She uses as examples recordings from the 19th c. and the beginning of the 20th c., and also new tape-recordings made in the late seventies. A short survey is done of the state of collecting, cataloguing and the study of Bulgarian historical legends, the corresponding bibliographical notes included.
