Chapter 2: Specifics of mythological and magical semiosis

Author(s): Peet Lepik
Subject(s): Semiotics / Semiology
Published by: Tartu Ülikooli Kirjastus

Summary/Abstract: 2.1. Basic terms The conflicting ways of approaching the concept of magic (not only in Lotman’s works) presume a systematic examination of this concept.1 Taking the schema sketched by Lotman as a basis, ‘magic’ is constructed here as a sign-creating concept — being thus in accordance with criteria that could also be the foundation for the semiotic interpretation of the other algorithms of the intellect. The conceptual schema from which the author proceeds is initially worded in the implementation of the analysis of magic and antithesis (the latter being examined in the following chapter). In Chapters 4 and 5, this schema should acquire a more systematic and argumented aspect as a deductively constructed model.
