Summary/Abstract: The issues of multiculturalism and multiethnicity have been chosen as the leading theme for the Fall 2002 issue of SLOVAK FOREIGN POLICY AFFAIRS. We consider these issues as not only extremely interesting, but also very important; they can play an important role in our discussions on the structure of Europe and the world to be established in this century. I agree with the famous philosopher, Charles Taylor, who said, .the greatest challenge for the 21st century shall be our understanding of .others... He has also said, .we cannot understand .others. without changing our self-understanding, without any shift in our identities able to bring about changes in our selfunderstanding, and understanding our goals and priorities. This is why multiculturalism has been refused so often.. We have no ambition to find comprehensive answers for all the questions related to the above-mentioned issues; we are just aiming to mention the most important ones.
