The Cultural Situation in Recent Two Decades and Violence in New Drama: Truth and Speculations

Summary/Abstract: The paper treats a major characteristic of the best part of modern dramas: its lasting necessity to use violence as a subject matter and build plots using the wide range of its manifestations. The paper seeks to outline the all-round context that has begotten this necessity, i.e. the social, political and mental transformations in the cultural situation over the recent two decades and present the specific post-expressionistic nature of using violence in theatre texts ever since the 1990s. The issue under consideration is commented in the light of various views of it – from attempts to find adequate explanation of it to conscious or unconscious speculations on it both in critical reflections and the stage and audiences’ receptions.
