Summary/Abstract: This study focuses on the connection between language, sex and gender from a sociolinguistic point of view. A distinction will be drawn between sex and gender and different opinions in the sociolinguistic literature will be presented. We will also briefly discuss what is called “men’s language” and “women’s language” and pinpoint some differences between the speech of men and women in European societies and not only. In the second part of the paper we will highlight some of the words which were once used to describe a woman in English and which have lost their original meaning and have undergone pejoration.
