Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the actual legislation in Bosnia-Herzegovina that refers (or should be referred) to activities of academic libraries and regulations that academic libraries should apply in their functioning. Bolonja education system forces academic and special libraries to adjust to the new education environment and improve their services to fit to constantly changing user needs, especially students, teachers, but also wider academic and social community. The role of academic libraries in the process of reforming higher education should be recognized by their parent institutions as an important support and investment in secure future, because the future and survival of libraries depends on the future of its parent institution in accreditation processes. The main focus is on the contemporary standards intended to evaluate quality, quantity, ponderability and a variety of academic library services. Through standardized services libraries could give a huge contribution to information literacy and lifelong learning programs. During the preparation and adoption of regulations, it is indispensable to harmonize standards and guidelines in librarianship on the cantonal and state level, for all types of libraries, based on European and international regulations.
