Summary/Abstract: Croatian ethnology has shown interest in various strands of cultural anthropology from the 1970s onward, which has resulted in a fruitful convergence of cultural anthropological theories and methodology with the study of own past and contemporary culture. The authors argue that for several decades the discipline has been developing as an anthropology at home/ethnologie du proche and that the discipline’s power lies in openness to multiple intellectual traditions which results in hybridity and reflexivity with regard to the production of knowledge. With the presentation of the recent history of the discipline in Croatia the authors hope to improve a dialogue and possible rapprochement of diverse European ethnologies and cultural anthropologies.
