ANALYSIS OF SOME BASIC LEGAL TERMS IN MODERN ENGLISH FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF THEIR BULGARIAN TRANSLATION

Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt at presenting a well-organized overview of such basic lexical units belonging to the field of legal terminology in English that are also part of the everyday usage of language and therefore can frequently be found in general texts. They are examined from the viewpoint of their Bulgarian translation analysing the more peculiar cases of differences in the connotative meaning in both languages engendered by the differences between the Anglo-Saxon Law in England and the Civil Law in Bulgaria. The analysis indicates the lack of exact translation equivalents of a number of words in English, which leads to the logical conclusion that English segments reality in a far more detailed way than Bulgarian. The conclusions offer some specific recommendations on how to teach these lexical units to Bulgarian learners of English.
