The Past in the Present: Actualized History in the Social Construction of Reality

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to show how anthropologists are dealing with history. It is therefore firstly essential to analyze the relations between social sciences and historiography taking into account the rigid but artificial "division of labour" of the two disciplines. The most important difference between the two disciplines is based on the fact that the time of the anthropologists is not identical with that of the historians. For the latter time is "real" and "exogenous"; on the contrary, the anthropologists consider it much more "endogene-ous" and thus "condensed in the individual" as a social actor. Therefore the anthropologists as opposed to the historians, concentrate on variegated dimensions of "actualized history". The anthropologists take the past in consideration only in as much as it is significant for the management of the present time of a society or for its projection in the future.
