Summary/Abstract: Quality of work is an essential feature of the European social model and a significant challenge for employment in Bulgaria, which, under the conditions of economic recession, becomes more closely linked to job security. The term encompasses multiple characteristics of work beyond the normative social protection of work and the narrow economic indicators of employment. On the basis of a survey carried out in 2007 as part of an international research project, this article presents comparative analysis of inter-company differences in work satisfaction of employees in the service sector. The regression model shows that most important for a higher quality of work are work autonomy and social support at the workplace, while the long working hours and the common practice of extra work on short notice tend to reduce the quality of work. Most of the significant factors are related to the social organization in the company – this factor can be expected to acquire greater importance with the tightening of labour market competition.
