Summary/Abstract: The present study is focused mainly on Sigmund Freud’s so called „early” project for „scientific psychology“. It is part of the correspondence between Freud and Wilhelm Fließ in the period from 1895 to 1930, and was published in a separate edition in 1950. The „Project“ belongs to the classical heritage of psychoanalysis and has been underestimated by the different psychoanalytic traditions and generations for decades after Freud’s death. We owe Karl Pribram (1976) the revisiting of this project in the context of scientific progress. The rejection of this fundamental construct in Freudian theory is scrutinized in our case study. It is outlined through the social and historical dynamics of the psychoanalytic movement in the 20th century. Instead of a conclusion, we propose a nonclassical interpretation of the actual motives for the revival, at the end of the 20th century, of the classical understanding of the Freudian conceptualizations embodied in the postmodern discipline called neuro-psychoanalysis.
