Farewell, Lavisse! The End of a Paradigm on History

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the appearance and decline of a paradigm in the science of history – the „paradigm of Ernest Lavisse“, historian of the Third Republic, „teacher of the nation“, and officiator of the temple of the Republic. This paradigm was dominant since the time of the professionalization of historians at the end of the 19th century, and until the 1970s. The author analyzes the new relations between collective memory and history, the „crisis of history as a discipline“, the logics of change in the contemporary age – the age of „the witness“, of „emotions“, of the „exploded national memory“, the age of debates on the memory laws, debates on the relationships between the historian and politics, and on „Lavisse’s error“.
