Summary/Abstract: The strong and tragically sounding lyrical and philosophic lines of Ecclesiastes of the human endeavour made in vain, of the shortness of life and the vanity that humans turn into valuables have provoked many European authors, especially in periods of crisis like the Baroque, to revise the truths of this biblical text – be it as paraphrases or as fictional interpretations of some extracts. The Book of Ecclesiastes turns into a peculiar metatext for the fictional work of Gryphius, Fleming, Hofmansvaldau, Calderón and Quevedo but also into an intertext piercing their thoughts on eternity and time and the human’s place in the world.
