Summary/Abstract: After an historical review of the approach to stereotypes "wrongness", this paper discusses the different ways social psychologists currently analyze what is wrong or may be right-with stereotypes: (i) their content, (ii) their effect on inference processes and on resulting judgments, and (iii) their behavioural consequences. It appears that (i) we know relatively little about content accuracy and that the accuracy question remains mostly a descriptive one, (ii) the difference between concepts such as inaccuracy, influence error and bias is far from being free from moral standards, and, (iii) research on stereotype based behaviours has neglected the interpersonal level and the importance of the stereotyper's goals. The paper concludes that what is probably needed is to develop theoretical links between content and bias, on one hand, and cognition and action, on the other.
