Summary/Abstract: The author examines the last and most radical attempt in the period of socialism in Bulgaria at liberalizing planned economy (1985–1989), with a view to coming closer to the achievements of western modernization. The gradual withdrawal of the state from its social distributing functions, the permission of private property, company organization and the introduction of shares together with the withdrawal from state protectionism, launched by the ruling Communist Party, however, undermined the economic foundations of its power and the grounds for it. For that reason the party proclaimed that it was carrying out those reforms in the name of “more socialism”. That approach, however, discredited the party’s policy of reforms and led to its being overthrown by society after November 10, 1989.
