Summary/Abstract: The radical reforms of Peter I, which aimed at bringing Russia out of the Middle Ages and surmounting its backwardness in comparison with the West, were received by Russian society with mixed feelings. Part of the people and particularly the schismatics — the Old Believers, gave way to eschatological sentiments and Satanized the ruler, quite often resorting to calumnies and myths. Certain symbolical statements and actions of Peter I and members of his circle, perceived as blasphemy and idolatry, were instrumental in intensifying these public reactions. Such attitudes have not been overcome and today thousands of people in Russia refuse to get new passports for fear of them containing “Antichrist’s figure”.
