Summary/Abstract: Lingua francas are generally understood as facilitating global/international communication on various planes. Yet they are intimately linked with the history of imperialism and colonial domination, as they served as the administrative and political tools of various empires. This paper attempts to offer a comparative perspective on the development of English and Russian as lingua francas in Asia in connection with the British and Russian Empires, highlighting both the differences and the similarities of their historical development.
