Summary/Abstract: Employment rates and forms of economic activity in 1989 — 1996 rural Bulgaria are considered a) as resulting from the current socio-economic transformations in the country; and b) as bringing about a further rearrangement in the existent group hierarchy and relations of inequality. The analysis is based on the results from a comprehensive survey of a big South Bulgarian village. Two basic findings have been arrived at. The Bulgarian village of today has been providing employment for an increasing number of town-dwellers. This has turned it into a major integration factor for the whole of society. On the other hand, though, the intensification of economic rural diversification has brought about new inequalities and further social stratification in the village.
