Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the valency frames of Czech light verb constructions which are hard to distinguish from other similar phrases by purely formal criteria only. It argues that there is no particular frame of a verb-noun phrase which cannot be derived from valency of the verb and the abstract noun. It also raises objections to Ľ. Kralčák’s explanation of Slovak valency frames of light verb constructions. The diachronic approach is further used to analyze Modern Czech constructions with a unique valency frame of the verb and show their parallels with non-abstract nouns in older, but also archaic language. After all, the question how to represent the valency structure of light verb constructions remains open.
