Summary/Abstract: This paper presents a brief historical overview of the principal characteristics of the cultural policy of France from the medieval to the present time, as well as the cultural identity of modern-day France and its principal characteristics: multi-cultural environment and multilingualism, and the belonging to both the European and the francophone culture. Even though the objectives of cultural policy were different in different periods and sometimes even seemed opposed, for more than two centuries now, a couple of objectives have been established as fundamental: awareness that cultural heritage should be protected and that, at the same time, the contemporary artists need well-organized financial and other support at the national level; and awareness that there are numerous distinct national cultures that deserve their place and reputation in modern society and that all those cultures (including the French culture) are a part of the broader European, even broader francophone, and the broadest world culture.
