Summary/Abstract: The objective of this study is to shed new light on the question about the origin of the city of Kiev – respectively the origin of the Rurik dynasty – in response to the contemporary scholars from Russia, Ukraine and some other countries who ignore the objective data of a number of sciences which are evidence of incessant continuity in the tradition of statehood in Eastern Europe even from the time of Hun hegemony as a minimum. On the basis of comparative analysis of data from written sources, archaeological, linguistic and folklore/ethnographic material, the author defends the thesis that Kiev was founded long before the Varangians were invited. The data from the auxiliary historical sciences gives the author grounds to assume with a considerable degree of authenticity that the founders of the Rurik dynasty were of Bulgarian (and on a broader scale Huno-Bulgar), not Norman origin, as well as to date the inception of this major commercial and administrative centre in the period of Huno-Bulgar-Avar hegemony in the region.
