Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on several aspects of the subject about the fate of Bulgarian Jews in the period of state anti-Semitism in Bulgaria beginning at the end of 1940 when Bulgarian anti-Semitic legislation was launched. The author has made a critical recapitulation of the main trends at the publication of sources and studies on the subject from the second half of the 1940s onwards. A review of the historical context in the country after World War I aims to reveal the conditions for anti-Semitic social and political attitudes. Special attention is paid to anti-Semitism in Bulgarian conditions, accompanied with periodical breakdown of its development. There is also a succinct outline of the focal points in the anti-Semitic policy of the Bulgarian state in 1940–1942. The stress on the subject of the ‘salvation’ of the Jews from deportation to the Nazi death camps has been laid on that who, when, why and how carried out the action on stopping the deportation. The role of the Deputy Chairman of Parliament has been underscored, as well as that of the Bulgarian monarch, King Boris III, it being assumed that the ‘saviors’ were a group of people and the ‘salvation’ itself was the product of collective effort.
