Summary/Abstract: Mr. Bernstein, among Yugoslav intellectuals you are very well known, mainly as eo-director of the course ''Philosophy and Social Science'' given at the Inter-University Post-graduate Centre in Dubrovnik as well as a co-editor of the journal Praxis International. In the opening editorial of the journal in 1981, you and Mihailo Markovic wrote that the journal ''will seek to carry on the spirit and work of Yugoslav journal Praxis in the new historical conditions of the 1980s, and on a larger international scale, in all those countries where progressive intellectuals and independent critical Marxists share similar aspirations and commitments.'' One of the outstanding topics of the subsequent volumes of the journal has been the discussion of the social theory of Jiirgen Haberrnas, due to the fact that his Theorie des Kommunikativen Handelns, published in 1981, was the philosophical event of the early 80s. You prepared an edition of the articles from this discussion, Habermas and Modernity and dedicated the book "to our Yugoslav friends.'' In the introduction you write: ''Haberrnas epitomizes the ideals of Praxis International. Consequently, the journal has served as a vehicle for the expression and critique of his views.'' Do we see here a sign of how the spirit of the journal has changed according to a new historical situation?
