Summary/Abstract: The article traces and compares Bulgarian and Romanian government policy towards military officers between independence in late 19th century and the beginning of World War I. It examines how legislative, political, financial, and educational developments shaped the social status, career, and private lives of high-level military personnel. The author concludes that authorities in both Bulgaria and Romania view the army as the foundation of their young nations, and, in order to attract the best and brightest, confer upon their army officers a number of material and social benefits.
