Summary/Abstract: Presented contribution has its theoretical-methodological and linguistically didactic character. It thematically affects the area of teaching contemporary Slovak language in the originally non-philological disciplines, which also include the journalism. Its goal is to define and describe the concept of language and metalanguage competence and then explain the nature of these conceptual categories in the specific conditions of educating today´s journalists, as well as in relation to the exercise of the journalistic profession. Individual components of language and metalanguage competence (systematically-stuctural, communicatively-textual, interpretative, creative) are in this contribution captured on the background of specific methods and methodologies by which they are implemented (should be implemented) in teaching and also with respect to dichotomous understanding of language both as a system and as the communication medium, respectively phenomenon of the third kind. Wider scope of the study is devoted to the development of interpretative components of language competence, because according to our opinion it is just this component, which represents a key point in understanding of the language functioning in the wider context of communication, including communication sector of mass media.
