Summary/Abstract: The practical, social relevance of the theme of otherness in the contemporary world is doubled by an all-encompassing theoretical reflection, which tends to prove that otheress has transcended the stage of concept, virtually developing into a meta-category. Our article will tackle the diffficulty of conceiving a rigorous classification of the diverse representations of alterity and will linger on the distinction operated by historian Lucian Boia between ordinary alterity and radical alterity. By analyzing a few contemporary literary representations, we will try to highlight the fact that a taxonomy, once firmly established, is used by researchers as much in the purpose of classification than for de-classification. Through the analysis of the novels Red Brezil by J.C. Rufin, we intend to prove that a whole series of figures of alterity belonging initially to a determined category can slip towards other categories.
