Summary/Abstract: Starting from specific cases in which the authors themselves disagree with the translation of their works into a foreign language, our paper aims at calling attention to the role of the collaboration between the translator and the author in successfully transferring identity. More precisely, we discuss the examples of Milan Kundera and Mircea Cărtărescu, in order to reveal the most important objections raised by these two authors against the translators of their works. Further on, we try to go beyond this fairly anecdotal evidence, and concentrate on more general issues related to the theory of translation. We also rely on the testimony of a Romanian translator whose professional experience is beyond any possible doubt (Mrs. Irina Mavrodin), and whose opinion about the issue of adequacy in translation seems particularly relevant to us.
