Summary/Abstract: Theoretically the paper is based on the assumption that the autonomy is the constructing principle of modernity. The empirical material is from the history of the first Bulgarian university. Academic autonomy is a principle for the creation of the institution of university. However, since this principle pertanins to a specific way of structuring of power relations and of organization of social life, it has a deep social meaning. University autonomy acquired additional value in social circumstances prevailing in Bulgaria of late 19th and early 20th century. Given the lack of civil society the state became main modernizing fac tor. The general attitude of lay community was permeated with the belief of the overwhelming power and control that the state can implement in all spheres of social life. Defending academic autonomy the University of Sofia became the institution which introduced into the public space an understanding of the relationship between the state and other institutins which was completely new for the Bulgarian society of that time and stimulated the acceptance of autonomy as a principle of development of modern society.
