Summary/Abstract: The paper gives an overview of the main facts from the history of the Italian language. Due to historic and social reasons the standard Italian has evolved just recently. Recently the government has identified a need for language policy, there was a law drafted on establishing the Council of the Italian language; however, it has not been adapted yet.
