The Bulgarian Elite Schools in Search of Identity

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present article is to outline some typical features and peculiarities of the state elite schools in this country, to delineate the specificities accormpanying the teaching process in these educational institutions. Important place is dedicated to trading of families of these schools, alumni, as well as the degree to which the pupils bear the inherited cultural and economic capital. The typical for state elite schools twofold function is analysed, as far as they are a place for the education of their own clientelle (Bourdieu) and of the potential customers of private education, which has not yet obtained the high authority inherent to the state institutions. Empirical data from a sociological survey carried out in Sofia in May 1996 are used in the article, as well as expert opinions of school inspectors in different subjects from the Regional Inspectorate of the City of Sofia. The analysis of the selection at the contemporary elite schools, of the environment and the teachers alow for the outlining of the technological function (the Graining) of these educational institutions as an element of their social function to create an elite.
