Summary/Abstract: The author treats photography as a medium that produces a specific mode of visuality. Its visuality is dependent on the specific characteristics of the medium, which are being maintained by an institution. Therefore, instead of analyzing photography as a content, there is a need to analyze the social mechanisms of its operation. Hence, photography is treated as a medium dispositif and analysed by employing the Actor-Network theory. The Lithuanian Society of Art Photography is analysed as a case study, and the results are presented in this article. In the 1960s–1980s, the Society in Lithuania was the only institution that enabled and at the same time regulated the production and distribution of art photography. The focus in the analysis of the medium dispositif is on institution as one of its key elements. Here, the main mechanisms of its operation – production, distribution and education – are being discussed. Also, the question is answered about the factors that condition the scale of its activity and an effective distribution of the regulated visual discourse. The dispositif is depicted as an actor-network not only in the textual mode, but also in visual maps which help to reveal the arrangement of their elements
