Summary/Abstract: The analysis of multiple dimensions and meanings involving the phenomenon of crusades was a constant for scientifi c literature, both foreign and autochthonous. Born in response to the Muslim conquests initiated as early as the seventh century, the holy wars were gradually placed in the context of beliefs and rituals of Christianity. The promises of absolution and gaining the heaven made to the participants, the purifying role of the pilgrimage to the Savior’s Tomb, the sacred of the expedition, the endurances of the Crusaders as the equivalent of individual penitence, the climate of eschatological waiting felt among Christians, constituted reasons for which the call of Pope Urban the IInd was successful. This study aims to address the theological and spiritual elements that contributed to the formation of an ideology and spirituality characteristic to the crusade.
