Summary/Abstract: The first part of the paper sets out contemporary readings of the concept of cosmopolitanism in three of Kant’s essays. The authors of these interpretations are Michel Foucault, Jurgen Habermas, Martha Nussbaum, Ulrich Beck, and Sharon Anderson-Gold; the three treatises by Kant are “An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment?” (Beantwortung der Frage: Was ist Aufklärung?) (1784), “Idea for a Universal History with a Cosmopolitan Purpose” (Idee zu einer allgemeinen Geschichte in weltbürgerlicher Absicht) (1784a), and Perpetual Peace (Zum ewigen Frieden) (1785). They are connected not only by their universal cosmopolitan vision, but also by the fundamental Stoicist principles of cosmopolitanism: reason, natural law and belonging. Linguistically, the essays are easier to read and understand than Kant’s complex Critique, and were composed in the spirit of the project (programme) for a better, more just society. The second part of the paper deals with the unusual and little-known postmodern interpretation of Kant’s concept of cosmopolitanism proposed by David Harvey from the perspective of critical geography. The author claims that a better cosmopolitan vision is possible than the one we now have as the legacy of Kantian theory and tradition.
