Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the connections between political and economic changes. The authors argue that the maintenance of strong group control over society (instead of strengthening and stabilizing the democratic political institutions) automatically leads to a whole interconnected set of economic consequences: the emergence of distribution coalitions; „internal privatization“, which isolates the economy from international markets and contractors; meagerness of investments (especially those coming from abroad); specific restructuring strategies at the micro-level, based on the reduction of the cost of labor; technological lag; branch restructuring that acquires the features of profound de-industrialization; etc. These changes lead to a deep economic crisis while limiting the capacity for overcoming that crisis, for they preclude the appearance of various new factors favorable to economic growth, trying instead to revitalize the old factors of growth that were once effective in the initial industrialization of the country. These changes also create obstacles to the European integration of Bulgaria and allot a peripheral position and role to the country in the European economy.
