Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the relativity of the use of the grammatical term pronoun, which is illustrated by Ibrahim Berbić’s bilingual Bosnian-Turkish grammar Bosanski turski učitelj, first published in 1893 in Istanbul. Trying to give the best possible description of the above mentioned word class, Berbić introduces a new term, “narečenici”. Our hypothesis is that the question of the use of the term pronoun in grammar books is primarily theoretical in nature, while such a question can also be practical in nature in works dealing with the contrastive analysis. This is so because in the description of two languages (L1 and L2) the solution to this problem has a strong impact on the solution to numerous other problems, not only on the level of the translational equivalence, but also on the level of the formal grammatical correspondence (a problem may also arise on the level of the classification of a word class within the grammatical systems of L1 and L2). Our drawing the attention to the relativity of the use of the term pronoun in works dealing with the contrastive analysis has no intention of suggesting the introduction of the “new”, more adequate terms in the grammar of our mother tongue.
