Aspects of Daily Life Reflected in Union Piazza Evolution

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the paper is an old and important public space of Iaşi city – Union Piazza. The history of this place was shaken by disputes, damages, aggressive renovation and incorrect rehabilitation. This study analyses aspects of daily life, reflected in the historical evolution of the piazza. The analysis shows that, in Union Piazza, the functions historically accumulated, with their positive aspects, but also with the negative ones, are still present. Mental pollution caused by aggressive architectural and urban operations in the 6 decade, was neglected and treated as an insignificant effect. The mistakes, both old and new, in the piazza rehabilitation, have broken its stateliness. Negligence and errors of the design and execution have disrupted the daily life of this area, resulting in visible physical consequences and subtle psycho-emotional consequences. Despite all the obvious dysfunctions, the inhabitants are still attracted to this area, they love and use it every day with joy, overlooking all details of discomfort. For them, the most important value of the Union Piazza is the sentimental value.
